How to Pop-Out in the Competitive Job Market

“What makes me special?” is a question that you may be thinking right now. With dozens of people applying for the same position, why would an employer choose you over any of the other applicants? Yes, there is stiff competition out there these days; it can sometimes feel impossible to find a job. However, there is a job for everyone. We must take action and make ourselves special in order to be the ideal candidate your next employer is looking for!

Here are some ways to pop-out in the competitive job market and finally end your job hunt!

Build a Quality Resume

It is not enough to simply state your qualifications on your resume and call it a day. You have to spend some serious time crafting a well-built resume. When listing your qualifications, list off specific statistics to give a more tangible idea of the actual work you put in. However, do not ramble on and let your resume creep onto multiple pages; keep it concise. For more help with your resume, check out our resume guide.

Education and Experience

After first graduating, many struggle to find a job since a degree or diploma may not be enough. An education is a good foundation for your career, but you must first build off that. You need to list all your prior work experiences, even if they do not seem relevant. For example, if you are looking for your first marketing gig, list your prior experience as a waiter since that still shows your drive and willingness to put in the difficult work. Volunteer experience is also excellent to list on your resume.

Internships are Highly Valuable

For those of you trying to get your first job ever or are changing industries, do not overlook internships. Not only do they offer great training and support networks, but they also look great on a resume. Not only does it show you have prior experience, but it shows companies that you care about learning about the intricacies of your chosen field. If you are considering an internship, we offer them here!

Networking to Gain an Edge

Sometimes, knowing the right people is all it takes to land a position. A positive word can go a long way in impressing an employer, whether from friends, families, or prior work colleagues. Always build new connections to perform potential long-term work relationships; you never know when they might come in handy. This is another reason why internships are so valuable; they are a great networking opportunity to help build career-long connections!

Handle Rejection Positively

Rejection stinks, but you will face it, no matter what. Yes, rejection is scary, but it is also a teaching tool. Whenever you do not land a job, you can reflect and learn why you did not land the position. Rejection will also make you a stronger, more resilient person, which will only make you a stronger candidate. To learn more about handling rejection, read our previous blog post!
